How teeth colors are affected?

Teeth colors differ naturally; some have whites whilst others may have yellowish. Sometimes also, age affects the color turning it from white to yellow. However, there are also several elements that can affect teeth color by causing extrinsic color (the professional term used to describe surface stains) or loss of color (discoloration).

Below is a list of some of these elements:

 Tobacco in any form (smoked or chewed)
 Coffee, tea or wine
 High-pigmented food like cherries and berries
 Tartar which comes from the hardening of plaque
 The intrinsic stains or internal stains can be the result of:
 A treatment using tetracycline as antibiotic during the formation phase of the teeth
 Color changes through aging
 Death of the teeth nerve through some kind of trauma turning it into a brown, gray or even black color.
Using too much fluoride during the teeth formation phase (from 0 to 16 years of age) can cause spots to appear on them.

How can we Whiten out teeth?

A dentist can remove external and visible marks, caused by tobacco or similar factors, through intensive cleaning sessions. The results can further be maintained by regularly using whitening toothpaste between the different sessions at the dentist’s. Treatment may be more intensive for older stains.
Intrinsic stains, i.e internal ones can be whitened through bleaching treatment, or they may be bonded or at times use of crowns may be useful. Only your dentist can decide which treatment will be more appropriate in each case, depending on the level and type of stains, and the tooth specifications (repaired / restored / fillings, etc)

How does the Whitening processing work?

The whitening process can be done either at home or under the professional hands of a dentist but both system lie on the effect of oxidization on the teeth to remove stain. This process may turn the teeth into more sensitive.

At-home Whitening

This is the most common method used today. However this method is a dentist-assisted one where the dentist takes an impression of your teeth and manufactures an appropriate tray. This tray is filled with the whitening gel and applied to the teeth for a couple of hours daily over a 14-day period. The 10-15% carbamide peroxide contained in the dentists prescribed solution act as active agent to make the whitening process an effective one.

In-office whitening

This system cost a little higher and is done through regular session at the dentists to achieve good results – one session may last for half to one hour. The teeth are secured in such a way as to allow contact with the gel only on the desired area, isolating the gums through a protective rubber shield. The bleaching agent is applied to the teeth, and at times a source of light is used to launch the whitening agent’s action.
